The Bregalnitsa River has overflowed and is threatening houses in Delchevo

The river Bregalnitsa near Delchevo overflows and the first houses in the town are in danger. During the night the river overflowed and flooded the pedestrian alleys on both sides of the riverbed. The benches and rubbish bins are no longer visible. The occupants of the first houses are closely monitoring the river level, and some residents have begun to take the first precautions by filling sandbags to make embankments in front of their yards, Skopje's online publication Sakam Da Skazem reports.

"Everything is under control and we are monitoring the situation. There is no danger of spillage. "We have prepared sandbags and if necessary we will put them on," said Delcevo Mayor Goran Trajkovski.

If necessary, the fire department of Delchevo has been prepared. Firefighters on duty say they have not intervened so far, nor have there been any calls, and they are monitoring the situation. So far, there is no major overflow of the river, but residents living down the Bregalnitsa River at the city's exit say the river has flooded some of the fields.

"We had such a high water level on the Bregalnitsa River in Delchevo 3-4 years ago. "It is good that today the rains, which rained for several days and caused this situation, stopped," said residents of the nearest houses near Bregalnitsa in Delchevo.

The situation is similar in Berovo, where Bregalnitsa threatens to flood some of the fields and nearby houses, but also to damage the five bridges.

"Two of the five bridges are for pedestrians and three for motor vehicles. But they are all threatened by wood and other debris that the river carries with it. The river level is already reaching its maximum. We haven't had such high waters in a long time. Rainfall in the city has stopped, but it is still raining in the mountains, so we need to take preventive and other concrete measures. An order has been given to clear the river of sediments, especially near bridges, special excavators will be included that can remove dragged trees from a distance. There is also damage in the villages. "On the road between Vladimirovo and Machevo, a 15-meter-long retaining wall has been torn down, so measures are being taken to clear the terrain," Berovo Mayor Zvonko Pekevski said.

This morning, citizens of Delchevo, Berovo and neighboring towns heard a call from the Road Macedonia National Park and other services to be careful on the roads to Vinica and Makedonska Kamenica, where there are landslides in many places. There is also a recommendation to refrain from traveling to Makedonska Kamenica and Kochani, where due to landslides it is especially dangerous near the village of Istibane instead of a few bends in the gorge at Bregalnitsa, where there are often frequent landslides. The teams of "Macedonia Road" are working on the elimination of landslides, but from the surrounding rocks on the road there are constant falls of smaller but also larger pieces, which can pose a serious danger to vehicles.
