French police have detained one of the suspects in the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Hashoghi, 33-year-old Khaled Eid al-Utaybi, RTL radio reports.
The former member of the Royal Guard of Saudi Arabia was detained at the Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris in the early hours of the day. He was waiting to board a flight to Riyadh. He had documents with the relevant personal data. However, authorities are now further verifying his identity.
He is expected to be taken to the Paris Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday morning, where he will be notified of the arrest warrant. In case of confirmation of the identity and voluntary consent of the detainee, France will hand it over to the Turkish authorities, where the case is being processed. Otherwise, the issue of his extradition will be decided by a French court.
The radio station claims that Khaled Eid al-Utaybi was at the Saudi consulate general in Istanbul at the time of the murder. He is one of the 20 citizens of the kingdom wanted by Interpol in connection with the crime. The arrest was made a day after French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Saudi Arabia, where he met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud.
