Open Balkans promotes greater regional integration

European Commission spokeswoman Anna Pisonero said the EU welcomed the fact that participants in the Open Balkans initiative were committed to promoting greater regional integration, Skopje-based Nova TV quoted her as saying.

Speaking to reporters, Pisonero said the biggest regional benefits would come from the participation of "all six countries in the Western Balkans" in the initiative.

She said regional integration, based on European Union rules, brings only benefits to the Western Balkans, which is why the EU is very interested in regional co-operation, according to the Kosovo Online portal.

According to Pisonero, the leaders of the Western Balkans must make progress in implementing the Common Regional Market, established at the Sofia Summit in 2020, with constructive commitment from all parties.

She emphasized that the EU would continue to support the Regional Cooperation Council, the CEFTA agreement, the Transport and Energy Community in order to benefit the entire Western Balkans and the wider region through enhanced regional cooperation.
