Polish border guards detain a Russian ship with a drunken captain and crew members heading to an island near Gdansk

Polish border guards detained the Russian dry cargo ship Ruslana in the Gulf of Gdansk in the Baltic Sea on Saturday. This was announced by the specialized Polish website "Sea Portal", quoted by TACC.

According to the information, the ship, owned by a transport company from St. Petersburg, "was moving at a speed of 11 knots straight to the beach on the island of Sobeshevsky <...> outside the designated waterway."

The incident happened on Saturday around 04:00 local time (05:00 Bulgarian time). The crew did not answer the calls from the border services and rescuers and border guards went to the ship. A kilometer from the beach, the cargo ship made a 180-degree turn, avoiding a jam. "The Russian ship sailing from Klaipeda escaped at the last minute off the coast of the island of Sobiszewski in the Gulf of Gdansk," the portal said.

The information states that the captain of the ship and two officers were drunk. According to Polish media, the ship was detained and proceedings were instituted in Poland, involving in particular the Maritime Administration in Gdynia over the incident. According to the Marine Traffic portal, the ship is currently in the port of Gdansk.
