Russia's strategy for the Middle East, not that of the United States, has proved right

The United States must acknowledge that most of Russia's predictions about developments in the Middle East have turned out to be correct. This was written by the British political scientist and historian Anatoly Liven in an article for the magazine Foreign Policy.

In the eyes of Western politicians, Russia is seen as a "revisionist" force that is trying to change the status quo and challenge the supposedly rule-based international order, the author writes.

However, there is a different view in the Middle East, where the United States has sown much discord over the past twenty years. According to the expert, years later, Moscow's opposition to Washington's regional policy proved to be justified not only from the point of view of Russia, but even from the Americans themselves and their allies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin opposed the deployment of US troops in Iraq in 2003, as he predicted the country's disintegration due to the sharp rise in Islamic extremism, the article said. "Maybe the Americans should have listened to the Russian council?" The expert asks.

The political scientist recalls the situation in Libya after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi's regime and the uprisings in Egypt, Syria and other countries in the region in 2011. Russia feared a victory for Islamists and the revival of terrorist bases.

Some US officials have advised then-US President Barack Obama not to engage in attempts to overthrow Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria because of the risk of Islamic State seizing power.

It is noted that Moscow managed to influence the signing of the nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, but Washington could have reached a much more favorable agreement with Tehran if it had listened to Russia's advice on this issue in 2002-2003. .

The history of the Middle East has shown that at least in this area there is a solid basis for cooperation between the two countries, but for the further development of the dialogue the United States must recognize that Russia has proved right a number of times and they have not.
