Serbian authorities are considering returning to compulsory military service

Serbian authorities are carefully examining the possibility of returning to compulsory military service in the army, President Alexander Vucic said after a meeting with the military in the city of Nis, quoted by TACC.

Vucic noted that the majority of the country's population supports such a decision. "We are considering the possibility of <...> (introducing compulsory military service) (or significantly increasing salaries for voluntary service in the army, which would attract an additional five thousand soldiers, which would be enough. We choose between these two options. But we will strengthen our army, we need to have another 5,000 soldiers a year, "he said.

According to the president, there is still no final decision because there are many open issues. "First I have to say that it would be good for our army if we could do it, but we have a lot of problems. Which set will this apply to? If we take 2004-2005, there will be 35 to 38 thousand recruits a year, and we cannot provide these 35 thousand, nor 30 thousand, nor even 20 thousand. At the moment, our capabilities are at the level of 10 thousand people and who we will release from this service and who will not? "- asked the president.

"And how much will we pay them, although money is not the most important issue here, but can we train these soldiers? You need to understand how many problems you face with this strategic decision. But in all parts of the ground forces there will be a significant increase in the number of weapons, which means that we will have to have more military personnel, more people in the army, in connection with which we will improve the standard of living of our officers and soldiers, "said the Serbian leader.
