The Carmel storm brought snow and cold to Greece

A low-pressure atmospheric front called Carmel has been hitting Greece since Friday, bringing low temperatures, strong winds and even snowfall to the country's central and southern parts, according to the online edition of the Greek newspaper Kathierini.

As of early Saturday morning, snow had already covered areas of northwestern Attica, such as Villa, Hippocrates Politia and Parnita, as well as Mount Pelio, Parnassus, Peloponnese, Phthiotis and parts of Euboea.

The National Weather Service (EMY) has reported a sharp drop in temperature caused by the influx of polar air masses from the north, which are expected to affect the region by 20 December.

Meteorologists say heavy rainfall (rain and snow) is forecast for Euboea, eastern Viotia, northern Attica and Crete. There will be thunderstorms, local and light hail in the coastal areas of the Middle and South Aegean Seas.

In Attica, snowfall will be limited to over 300 meters above sea level in the western and northern parts of the prefecture, while in other areas there will be rainfall. In the northern suburbs there will be snow or sleet at about 300 meters above sea level, with snowfall over 400-500 meters expected.
