German vice chancellor calls Nord Stream 2 a "geopolitical mistake"

The Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy and Climate Protection of the Federal Republic of Germany, Robert Habeck, believes that the Nord Stream-2 project is a geopolitical mistake of Germany. He made the statement in an interview published on Saturday for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Nord Stream 2 was a geopolitical mistake. "All European countries, except Germany and Austria, have always been against it," Habek said. Now the pipeline is built. It is unclear whether he will be able to work. "This issue must be decided in accordance with European and national legislation," he said.

Habek recalled that the pipeline must comply with the rule of so-called spin-off or division of companies. Its meaning is that companies that extract resources are not allowed to transport them - these two processes require different companies.

"This condition has not been met," the minister said. "There was a lot of political pressure under the old German government on the launch of Nord Stream 2, and yet it was not put into operation," he said.

Habek also threatened Moscow with severe consequences in the event of a military conflict between Russia and Ukraine and allowed the possibility of such a development not to be released in the context of Nord Stream 2. "The Federal Network Agency makes decisions based on legislation. Another question is what will happen if Russia violates Ukraine's territorial integrity again and the situation escalates. Any new military aggression cannot go unnoticed. There can be no bans on considering (one or the other) measures, "Habek said when asked if plans to launch the Nord Stream-2 pipeline could fail.
