The European Commission has proposed introducing criminal liability in the EU for environmental crimes and punishing them with 10 years in prison for individuals and fines of up to 5% of the turnover of companies for legal entities. This is stated in the draft directive on combating crime against the environment presented by the European Commission on Wednesday, which was presented by the European Commissioner for Environment and Oceans Virginius Sinkevičius, TASS reports.
"The new directive will mean much harsher penalties against people and companies for violations such as illegal dumping, illegal timber trade and water pollution. We must be clear - crimes against the environment are not crimes without victims, they can cause irreparable long-term damage not only to ecosystems but also to human health, he said. "If crimes against the environment have led to death or serious consequences for human health, we propose that the penalty be up to 10 years in prison, for companies we propose an increase in fines to 5% of their turnover on the world market."
