The European Commission will propose a plan this week that will allow Community member states to buy natural gas together on a voluntary basis, the Spanish national daily El Pais reported, citing sources.
The initiative of the European Commission envisages the creation of strategic fuel reserves and the possibility for the member states of the Community to buy natural gas together. The purpose of the proposal is to enable Member States to withstand crisis situations such as fuel shortages or sharp increases in fuel prices.
The initiative is expected to be presented to the EC on Tuesday. According to the idea, the countries that wish will be able to use the plan for joint gas purchases, and then direct the fuel to strategic reserves. Each country will be able to store the purchased gas on its own territory or in another country.
