The EU is not strong enough to impose sanctions on Russia in the gas sector

According to Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, the European Union does not currently have enough capacity to impose sanctions on Russia in the gas sector, the TACC quoted him as saying.

"We Europeans have at least some economic disincentives. Are we strong enough? Is the moment right? "Obviously the answer is no," Draghi told a closing news conference on the Italian government's official YouTube channel.

According to the Italian Prime Minister, the EU must continue to pursue a "participation policy" towards the Russian Federation. Draghi stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin, through contacts with his US counterpart Joe Biden, "wants to remain in a state of negotiation in which it is still possible for events to unfold without irreversible consequences."

The head of the Italian government also noted that "NATO's strategic priorities" are currently not related to Europe. "There is currently NATO, an organization that has declared other strategic priorities, such as those in the Indo-Pacific region. This does not mean that NATO is absent from Europe, "he said.

Speaking in the Senate (upper house of parliament) on December 15th, Draghi expressed hope that there would be no need to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2, as this could significantly affect energy market prices. He noted that the pipeline should remain a tool for EU-Russia negotiations.
