The number of asylum seekers in the EU exceeded the level before the pandemic for the first time

 


 The number of people who applied for asylum for the first time in the European Union in September 2021, for the first time exceeded the level registered before the coronavirus pandemic and amounted to 60.8 thousand people. This is stated in a statement from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).

According to reports, 55,700 people applied for asylum in February last year.

Most of the people who first applied for asylum in September are Afghan nationals. Their number is 13.8 thousand - 63% more than in August. They are followed by Syrians (8.7 thousand), Iraqis and Bangladeshis (2.7 thousand), Turks (2.5 thousand) and Pakistanis (2.4 thousand).

Most have applied for asylum in Germany (23%) and France (21%).

It is also noted that in September last year the number of applications was 58% lower - 38.6 thousand. The highest growth was registered in Lithuania (1011% compared to September 2021), Poland (772%) and Italy (493%).
