EU scientists will study European history during the French presidency of the Union, Macedonian experts say Macron's project will have an impact on the Macedonian-Bulgarian dispute, Skopje's 24 Vesti TV channel said.
Presenting the priorities of the French EU presidency, Emmanuel Macron said he wanted to work on the History of Europe project, which would aim to combat the historical revisionism that exists in some EU countries. Although the Balkans are not the focus of this Paris initiative, it will have a major impact on Skopje and Sofia, experts say.
"There is no doubt that such a historical discussion would have an impact on enlargement, and in particular on our disputes with Bulgaria, in the context of historical issues. We, as a country, have long wanted the Commission working with Bulgaria to acquire an international dimension, to be open to Europe and beyond. That is why I think that such a discussion in the EU and this initiative could probably direct, often the extreme path it takes, a large part of the Bulgarian commission, "said Simonida Katsarska.
The work of European historical experts is expected to be completed in the second half of the year, starting in June. Hence the question of how much the long-standing Macedonian-Bulgarian commission will be needed in the future if the past passes into the hands of European historical experts, the TV channel commented.
"I expect, of course, Bulgaria to insist on the existence of this commission, although we have a new development with a potential new prime minister, who announced that we should not discuss only historical issues. "I expect that if this initiative materializes, it will provide a framework, set an example, and then our commission can be discussed if it decides to continue working," Katsarska said.
