The introduction of lockdown in Belgium "is not yet on the table", assured the Minister of Health of Wallonia

Against the backdrop of the decision of the ruling countries in Belgium's neighbors to announce strict restrictions in response to the growing number of people infected with coronavirus and the spread of its new version "Omicron", Wallonia's Minister of Health Christie Moreale assured that the government is not considering the introduction of lockdown, notes The Brussels Times.

Speaking to RTL-TVi on Sunday, Moreale said the strict lockdown - as it comes into force in the Netherlands today - "is not on the table for the government at this stage".

She pointed out some important differences between the state of public health in the Netherlands and Belgium; in particular the fact that three times as many Belgians have been vaccinated with a third dose against COVID-19.

Nevertheless, Moreale emphasized the need to "double the third dose: it is essential that everyone who qualifies goes to a vaccination center". She also stressed the importance of respecting other protection measures - ventilation, wearing a mask, social distancing and limiting the number of close contacts.

Although he denied planning a lockdown, Moreale also stressed that Belgium should not ease the current regulations.

Belgium has not yet decided how its coronavirus strategy will develop since the latest measures were introduced two weeks ago. However, as neighboring countries such as the Netherlands and France redouble their efforts to prevent the spread of the virus, it is unlikely that the current restrictions will be eased at the next Advisory Committee, to be held on Wednesday 22 December.

Meanwhile, the third demonstration this month against sanitary restrictive measures and the possible introduction of compulsory vaccinations took place in Brussels on Sunday. As in the previous two, the last one led to clashes with the police.
