The parliament in Skopje has noted the resignation of Zoran Zaev

The Macedonian parliament has noted the resignation of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, and deadlines for forming a new government are now underway. According to the rules of procedure of the parliament and the constitution, the state must have a new government within 30 days at the latest, informs the Macedonian edition of Radio Free Europe.

The resignation of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev was hailed by applause from VMRO-DPMNE lawmakers, and the current government remains in office until a new one is elected. Zaev announced his resignation after the local elections. He informed the Speaker of Parliament that he had taken the decision as a logical step resulting from the outcome of the local elections and as an expression of responsibility for this failure. The results of the last elections, as he pointed out, although local, have a principled and political weight for the political moment in which the country finds itself.

The Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament regulate the procedure in case of resignation of the Prime Minister. The deadlines for forming the new government begin to run after the resignation of the deputies is announced.

Article 90 of the Constitution states that the President of the country is obliged to assign the mandate for the composition of the government to a candidate of the party or parties that have a majority in the Assembly.

The nominee for prime minister submits a program and proposes the composition of the government within 20 days from the day of assigning the mandate. The government, on the proposal of the Prime Minister and on the basis of the program, is elected by the assembly by a majority of the total number of deputies.

This means that within 30 days at the latest, the country will have a new government headed by Zaev, his successor, Dimitar Kovachevski. Kovachevski was deputy finance minister, and in the meantime became SDSM leader. At the same time, the SDSM secured a majority in parliament with Alternative joining the ruling coalition.
