The United States has reaffirmed its support for Cyprus' natural gas exploration projects after the country granted a license for exploration in the Mediterranean to Exxon Mobil and Qatar Petroleum this week, according to the online edition of the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
"US policy on the Republic of Cyprus's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) is long-standing and has not changed. The United States recognizes the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop resources in its exclusive economic zone, "a State Department spokesman said on Saturday, commenting on Turkey's response to exploration licenses issued by Cyprus.
Turkey on Thursday accused Cyprus of violating its continental shelf by granting a license to explore the two companies, saying it would not allow unauthorized exploration in its jurisdiction.
The Cypriot cabinet said on Thursday it would grant a license to Exxon Mobil and Qatar Petroleum to explore for hydrocarbons in part of Cyprus's declared EEZ, located south and southwest of the island.
Turkey's foreign ministry says the move violates its continental shelf in the eastern Mediterranean. However, Cyprus said the area was part of the island's continental shelf.
