The United States is considering heavy sanctions against the ruble if Russia invades Ukraine

The United States and its allies are considering imposing new sanctions on the Russian Federation against a number of credit institutions and the Russian Direct Investment Fund, and in particular limiting the conversion of the ruble in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine. This was announced by Bloomberg on Tuesday, citing its sources.

"Sanctions that could be imposed, including against some of Russia's largest banks and the Russian Direct Investment Fund, are one of the possible options that [US] President Joe Biden could outline on Tuesday during talks with [Russian counterpart] Vladimir Putin. ""They believe that the most difficult measure would be to sever ties with SWIFT, but this would deal a serious blow to Russian citizens. Therefore, officials are more inclined to deprive Moscow of the opportunity to convert the ruble into dollars, euros and British pounds.

In addition to excluding Russia from the SWIFT bank payment system, a ban on investing in Russia's public debt on the secondary market is being discussed, the agency noted.

Negotiations between the Presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States in the form of a teleconference are scheduled for 16:00, European time
