The new chairman of the Munich Security Conference will be former German Permanent Representative to the UN Christoph Heusgen, who will take office in February. This was announced by the current head of the forum Wolfgang Ischinger in an interview with Das Handelsblatt.
"The time has come to hand over the operational leadership [at the conference] to the younger ones. In this regard, I proposed that the Board of Trustees entrust the chairmanship of the Munich Conference to Christoph Heusgen, "said Ischinger, who has chaired the prestigious forum since 2008. Powers will be transferred to him after the next conference in February 2022. I will remain chairman. of the Board of Trustees ", explained Ischingen.
Heusgen is considered a close ally of Angela Merkel. From 2005 to 2017, he was her security policy adviser. He was then appointed Germany's permanent representative to the United Nations and remained in office until September this year, when he was replaced by Ante Lenderze.
