Cyprus says it will continue gas exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean despite Turkey

On Friday, Cyprus rejected allegations that it was violating Turkey's continental shelf by granting a license to explore the Mediterranean to Exxon Mobil and Qatar Petroleum, saying it would be done within its sovereign rights, Reuters reported.

Turkey on Thursday accused Cyprus of violating its continental shelf by granting a license to explore the two companies, saying it would not allow an unauthorized study in its jurisdiction, according to Ankara.

The Cypriot cabinet said on Thursday that it would grant a license to Exxon Mobil and Qatar Petroleum to explore for hydrocarbons in part of the declared Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), located south and southwest of the island.

Turkey's foreign ministry says the move violates its continental shelf in the eastern Mediterranean. Cyprus said the area was part of the island's continental shelf.

"Turkey deliberately refuses to comply with international law by making unfounded claims and disregarding the position of the international community in full support of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus on its own continental shelf," a statement from the Cyprus Foreign Ministry said.

"The Republic of Cyprus will resolutely pursue its hydrocarbon policy, in full respect of international and European law.
