Dimitar Kovachevski is on his way to becoming Macedonia's prime minister

The ruling Socialist Socialist Party SDSM in northern Macedonia elected Dimitar Kovachevski as its new leader on Sunday, paving the way for him to take over as prime minister from Zoran Zaev amid months of political uncertainty in the country, according to Politico.

Kovachevski, 47, an economist and current deputy finance minister, defeated two other candidates. He was considered Zaev's favorite to take on the role.

Zaev announced his intention to step down at the end of October as prime minister and leader of the SDSM after the party lost local elections. However, he later decided to remain prime minister until the country's political situation stabilizes.

Since then, the outgoing prime minister has also managed to avoid a no-confidence vote in parliament and even strengthened his party's majority in the hall by adding a new coalition partner.
