Greece must always pursue a multidimensional foreign policy in favor of new architecture in the region and firmly strive to be a bridge between the European Union and Russia. This was stated to TASS correspondent by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of our southern neighbor and in charge of SYRIZA on foreign policy issues George Katrungalos, commenting on the results of the visit to the Russian Federation of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
"For Greece, compliance with international law, including with regard to Ukraine, is and must be a priority. But we must always pursue a multidimensional foreign policy in favor of new architecture in the wider region, firmly striving to be a bridge between our political home, which is the European Union, and Russia, with which we have long historical and cultural ties, "Katrungalos said.
The former first diplomat of Athens praised the results of the December 8 meeting in Sochi between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mitsotakis, but at the same time criticized the recent anti-Russian attacks by a number of Greek leaders."Any Greek-Russian summit is positive if it contributes to the development of bilateral relations, although the signal given by Putin that he expects Greece to show restraint as a NATO country" was clear. Mitsotakis's statement that "we will seek de-escalation, not rhetoric of tension" was also positive, although I cannot fail to note that his recent statements to The Financial Times and The Washington Post, as well as to the Secretary of Defense, they were made in a completely different spirit, unprecedented for the Greek positions, "Katrungalos said.
