Greek bishop bans priests from his diocese from supporting opponents of vaccination

A Greek Orthodox bishop has banned priests from his diocese from expressing any support for opponents of the vaccination, saying his patience is running out, Kathimerini writes.

In an encyclical issued to the clergy on Friday, Metropolitan Ignatius of Dimitriada, whose cathedral is located in Volos, said that "the unacceptable attitude of (some) brothers in the faith has caused great damage to our laity."

"From now on, we strictly forbid any mention of Covid-19 disease and anti-vaccination campaigns, whether in sermons or otherwise, including in the context of hearing confessions and in personal communication with your parishioners," he told his clergy.

He said he would not hesitate to impose sanctions on priests who do not obey his orders, starting with a ban on giving blessings and hearing confessions.

He also said he would begin reviewing each individual case of priests who remain unvaccinated.
