The Israeli air force attacked ground targets in Syria in June 2021 and in March 2020, as Tel Aviv believed that Damascus could resume production of chemical weapons there, writes the American newspaper The Washington Post, citing sources from the intelligence services of the United States and other Western countries.
"There were more and more signs of resumption of production on their part," the paper quoted a statement as saying.
According to this information, the Israeli authorities have ordered the strikes on the basis of intelligence they have received, which suggests that the Syrian government is acquiring chemicals that can be used to restart chemical weapons production in the country. The air strikes, according to this information, were carried out on June 8, 2021 on three military targets near Damascus and Homs. A year earlier, on March 5, 2020, two targets were attacked in the vicinity of Homs.
According to sources in the newspaper, the Israeli authorities hoped that the strikes would be of a preventive nature and that they would deactivate the production facilities even before the alleged weapons were created
