Disinformation, including on social media, is no longer just a matter of national security, but a threat to global security, the Turkish president warned, quoted by the Anatolian Agency.
Lies, fabricated news and misinformation are spreading quickly through the use of social media, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a video message sent by the first day of the Stratcom 2021 summit in Istanbul, Turkey's commercial capital.
"The lives of millions of people have been darkened by such news spread through channels that lack any effective control mechanism," he told the summit.
Erdogan said that when they first appeared, social media was hailed as a symbol of freedom, and has now "become one of the main sources of threats to today's democracy".
"In this regard, it is important to inform the public and fight disinformation and propaganda within the truth," he said. "We are trying to protect our people, especially the vulnerable sectors of our society, from lies and misinformation, without compromising the right of our citizens to receive accurate and impartial information.
"No one, no company can be above the law," he stressed.
"We will definitely not allow the truth to be devalued by disinformation operations and the truth to be covered up with lies," he promised.
Noting that he believes that the Stratcom International Strategic Communication Summit will fill an important gap in this area, Erdogan thanked all participants who contributed to the two-day event.
Turkey is hosting this weekend's Stratcom 2021, an international gathering to address the fascinating policies, issues, challenges and trends of the strategic communication ecosystem.
