Record snowfall blocks Belgrade airport

 


 A record amount of snow fell on Sunday in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, disrupted the operation at Nikola Tesla Airport. According to the information, the flights from Belgrade have been suspended since 12:30 (13:30 Bulgarian time), TACC reports.

Most of the flights to Belgrade have also been postponed, after 13:00 (14:00 Bulgarian time) only the plane of the Austrian airline, which travels from Vienna, managed to land. Information about the power outage in the airport building appeared on social networks.

 A blizzard began in Serbia on Saturday and Sunday, which has not stopped so far. According to weather forecasters, up to 50 cm of snow is expected in the Sofia region, which is an absolute record for the country. Heavy wet snow led to many accidents, trees and lamps fell on the road under its weight. A tree fell on a bus in Belgrade .

Most of the bus lines in the capital have been canceled. Car enthusiasts who dare to go out on the roads drive on snowy streets at minimum speed. Snowdrifts blocked a passenger train on the route from Požega to Loznitsa. A bus was sent to rescue the passengers.

 National television reported that a bus with a youth volleyball team overturned due to snow on the roads. As a result of the accident, five people were injured - four athletes and a coach. All are hospitalized, there is no danger to their lives.

Authorities in Belgrade say all available special equipment (over 100 units) has been activated to clear the streets of snow. The main city highways can be maintained in a satisfactory condition, but traffic is very difficult on secondary roads and narrow city streets.
