Romanians try to storm parliament in Bucharest to prevent introduction of mandatory Covid passports

Enraged Romanians tried to storm the country's parliament on Tuesday when they blocked several important roads in the capital of our northern neighbor and smashed several cars in an attempt to thwart MPs' intention to make Covid passports mandatory for workers, Reuters reported.

Anti-riot forces were caught unprepared when thousands of citizens appeared at the gates of parliament, spraying cars with spray and forcing security officials to block the building's entrances. The protesters later left. The police did not use force.

Although the ruling coalition of centrists and the left is currently negotiating the terms of the health passport mandate, such a bill is not currently on parliament's legislative agenda.

Thousands from across the country gathered in front of parliament on Tuesday morning, waving Romanian flags and shouting "Freedom" in a protest organized by the nationalist Union for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) party.

In October, Romanian senators narrowly rejected a bill requiring medical staff, public sector employees and those of large private companies to present a mandatory health pass for COVID-19, aimed at increasing the population's injection of coronavirus drugs. .

The coalition government is negotiating a new bill that will require most workers to show they have been vaccinated, recovered from the virus or have a recent negative test, but have not yet agreed on who will pay for the test and for how long.

Romania is the second least vaccinated country in the European Union, with approximately 40% of the population injected.
