Russia and the United States have begun talks on security guarantees

Russia and the United States have begun "contacts" on the issue of security guarantees requested by Moscow from NATO and Washington, and the two countries are likely to reach an understanding. This was announced to the media by Russian diplomat Konstantin Gavrilov, Reuters reports.

Russia has not yet decided what steps it will take if NATO-led refuses to reconsider its position. However, Brussels should be aware that Moscow is not bluffing, Gavrilov was adamant.

Russia has demanded assurances that NATO will not allow Ukraine into its ranks and that it will not deploy weapons and troops on its territory, despite Kiev's aspirations to join the Alliance, the agency recalls.
