Shoigu announced the creation of two new Russian bases in the Arctic

Russia has reliably strengthened its Arctic borders against foreign aggression by building two new military bases, deploying missile and air defense systems, and aviation. This was announced by the Army General and Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu, quoted by the newspaper VZGLYAD.

"On the Arctic islands, archipelagos and in remote areas of the coast, the establishment of two military bases has been completed, and combat duty of air defense units and coastal missile systems has been organized. Reconstruction of five airports to accommodate all types of aircraft is nearing completion. The adopted set of measures allowed us to reliably strengthen Russia's Arctic borders from the aggressive military activity of foreign countries, "the publication quoted Shoigu as saying at an extended meeting of the Defense Ministry's board with the participation of President Vladimir Putin.

The minister noted that the Russian armed forces have also contributed to securing supplies to the polar regions.

In December 2020, Russia completed the construction of a military base in the Franz Josef Land archipelago, the publication recalls.
