The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a German project, so issues related to it must be decided by the government in Berlin. This was emphasized by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in an interview with German radio Deutschlandfunk. According to the Spanish politician, if the project fully complies with European rules, Brussels will have no reason to prevent Germany from using the pipeline.
The new German government can take a firmer stance on Russia, Borel said, adding that Berlin's new foreign minister, Analena Burbock, is determined to support Ukraine's independence, unity and territorial integrity.
However, now the main efforts must be focused on de-escalating the current situation, Borel stressed. "Now we, as diplomats, should not throw more wood into the fire, but try to prevent the situation from getting worse."
Speaking about possible new sanctions against Russia, in particular its possible removal from the SWIFT system, Borel stressed that he would not like the situation to worsen. He also noted that concrete new anti-Russian sanctions would not be discussed at the upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers.
