We propose changes to the rules of the Schengen area due to the migration crisis

The European Commission has come up with a proposal to reform the Schengen area because of the coronavirus pandemic and the migration crisis. The proposal includes the introduction of temporary restrictions on movement at the Community's external borders in the event of a threat to public health, according to a press release published on the official website of the bloc's executive body.

"Today, the EC is proposing updated rules to optimize the governance of the Schengen area. "... The new rules provide common tools for better management of the external borders in the event of a health crisis, based on the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic," the statement said. The reforms, in particular, involve reducing the number of checkpoints in operation.

In addition, the EC is considering extending the deadline for registering asylum applications to four weeks, as well as considering their applications directly at the border, the press release said.

Last Thursday, France expressed its intention to change the rules of the Schengen area to improve coordination in the fight against illegal migration.
