The United States has registered a record number of immigrants since 1910

The number of immigrants in the United States has grown significantly this year - according to the Center for Migration Studies, the country has added 1.5 million new residents. The total number of "foreigners" in America reached a record 46.2 million, writes The Washington Times.

After last year's decline, probably due to the coronavirus pandemic and restrictions on immigration and entry, just as President Joe Biden came to power, the influx of new Americans has begun to rise again. As the newspaper notes, "in unprecedented numbers, they come to the country legally, crossing the border at airports and by land, and illegally through the Rio Grande and remote parts of Arizona and California."

"The demand for legal immigration has accumulated and illegal immigration has shown one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful, tides we have ever seen. So the numbers are growing and growing, "said demographer Stephen Camarotta, lead author of the report by the Center for Migration Studies.

Currently, 14.2% of the US population is "born abroad," or one in seven. This is the largest share of immigrants in the population since 1910, when the figure was 14.7%. If trends continue, according to government estimates, America will break this record - much earlier than the end of this decade.

According to The Washington Times, the increase in the number of immigrants stands out against the background of the previous decline. In the year after the election of former President Donald Trump, the percentage of people born abroad stopped growing, but in the period from the end of 2017 to the beginning of 2019 it began to grow again. Then came the pandemic.

Now, under Biden, the border crisis has played a major role in increasing the number of immigrants - as Karamota points out, an impressive percentage of Latinos are arriving, accounting for 61% of the increase in the last year.

As the publication explains, in his work Karamota refers to data from the Current Population Survey, which is prepared monthly by the Census Bureau. Unlike the larger US community survey, which is also often used to assess the immigration situation, the first program allows for more detailed monitoring of current changes in statistics. In addition, the current population survey reveals trends in legal and illegal immigration, which are often not reflected in official documents of the border services.

The last major survey of American society was conducted in 2019. Data then show that the percentage of people who immigrate illegally to the United States will decline in the long run. However, as Karamota notes, new results from the current study show that the situation has changed.

Part of the reason for such assessments is the new US policy under President Biden, who, along with congressmen from the Democratic Party, seeks to stimulate the influx of immigrants, provide amnesty for those who entered the country illegally, and open more roads for legal settlement.

In the 1970s, almost every 20th person in America was an immigrant. In 2000 - every ninth, and now - every seventh. This is largely due to the declining birth rate in the United States. That is why the country needs an influx of new people - a potential workforce to help sustain expensive social programs, according to immigration advocates. After all, they may face bankruptcy because the U.S. population may not be able to handle it on their own.

But, as Karamota warns, politicians and entrepreneurs fighting for immigration are not paying enough attention to whether the country is able to accommodate so many people, as their numbers will have a direct impact on the education system, healthcare and the labor market.
