The West could strike another blow at Russia

In an article for The National Interest, Peter Suchiu explains why Russia's fears of a new "invasion" of Western countries are not unfounded.

"It is not surprising that the Russian bear sharpens its claws: it modernizes the fleet, conducts regular exercises and develops new weapons - from the T-14" Armata "tank to hypersonic and submarine-launched missiles," the author writes.

According to the author, for most Americans the idea of NATO aggression seems exaggerated, but Moscow is not in vain preparing for such a scenario. As the journalist recalls, in the last few centuries, Western powers have repeatedly tried to challenge Russia and seize its territories.

The United States invaded the country during the 1918 Civil War and took part in battles against Bolshevik forces. Only two decades later, Nazi Germany unleashed a bloody conflict against the USSR with millions of victims, Suchiu recalls.

"After the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia may have become more vulnerable as many of its former communist-era satellites - Poland, Hungary and Romania, as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia - joined NATO," the columnist said.

According to Suchiu, the modernization of the Russian army should not be seen in terms of offensive capabilities, but rather as a deterrent and a guarantee that Moscow will not undergo a new invasion by the West.
