The Greeks celebrated the New Year against the background of a new record of coronavirus infections due to the strain "Omicron", writes the electronic edition of the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
The city of Athens hosted its usual televised New Year's concert and fireworks without public presence, and events in other parts of the country were also limited.
In a message to the Greek people at the end of the year, Greek President Katerina Sakelaropoulou said 2022 would be a "year of optimism and revitalization" and stressed the importance of mass vaccination to halt the virus.
The Covid-19 vaccines, she said, "preserve public health and ensure that doctors and nurses can provide their valuable services."
Similarly, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned of "waves" in the coming weeks, but said Greeks "have the power to leave the storm behind and lead the country into calm waters, so that this winter of uncertainty can be replaced by a spring of hope. "
SYRIZA's main opposition leader, Alexis Tsipras, said 2022 should be "a year of great change" and an opportunity for Greeks to "regain their lives and dignity".
