A leak of petroleum products has occurred at Total's plant in southern France

A leak of petroleum products from the Total plant in southern France has occurred in the Marseille-Rhône canal, BFM TV reports.

"The hydrocarbons got into our sewer system and from there into the canal," explained plant director Philip Bilan.

The pollution took place at the Total La Mede refinery in Chateauneuf-les-Martigue.

The management of the plant has already ordered measures to be taken to eliminate the leak, which is characterized as "relatively moderate". A crisis headquarters has been set up to deal with the situation.
