Floods and snowstorms in the United States

Floods hit an area in the northwestern United States on Friday after torrential rains as a winter storm brought more than 15cm of snow to the eastern part of the country, closing schools, offices and busy roads, Reuters reports.

Flood and storm warnings are in effect in many coastal areas of the Northwest Pacific, while winter storm warnings remain for eastern Maine, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

"A system of storms will move to the northwest today with heavy coastal rain and snow in the mountains," the statement said.

More than 50,000 West Coast subscribers are currently without electricity, while Virginia is the hardest hit state in the east, according to data from poweroutage.us.

Earlier storms in Kentucky, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland brought 15 to 20 cm of snow, with New England being the hardest hit, with more than 30 cm of snow falling in some areas on Thursday and Friday.

Federal government offices in Washington have been closed, and many schools in the east of the country have canceled classes due to snow and cold weather.

The storm was the second this week to hit the eastern United States. The region was covered in 30 cm of snow on Monday, with thousands stranded for up to 27 hours when a nearly 80-kilometer stretch of Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia became impassable.
