NATO will not allow Ukraine into the Alliance for the foreseeable future

Ukraine will not be able to join NATO in the foreseeable future. This opinion was expressed on Thursday by columnists of The New York Times.

According to them, Ukraine's entry into the North Atlantic Alliance is hampered by several reasons, one of which is the uncertainty of European NATO members regarding the country's entry into the Alliance, which, given the need for consensus to accept a new member, makes Ukraine unrealistic.

In addition, the authors of the article point out that despite numerous statements by the US administration about Ukraine's accession to NATO, its leader Joe Biden has always been cautious in such statements, and since the late 2000s he has become less zealous in his position. on the enlargement of the Union to the east.

In addition, the United States and other members are unhappy with Kiev's progress in fighting corruption. According to Transparency International, the country ranks 117th out of 180 on this indicator.

In conclusion, experts note that Russia has significant economic leverage over Europe, in particular gas supplies, so many European countries will prefer not to spoil relations with Moscow. "Given all this, Ukraine will almost certainly not meet the third main criterion for joining NATO: approval by all 30 members," the authors conclude.

The North Atlantic Alliance adopted a political statement at the Bucharest Summit in April 2008 that "Ukraine and Georgia will eventually become members of NATO", but refused to provide the two countries with an action plan to prepare for membership, the first step in the legal procedure for the country's accession to the organization. In February 2019, the Verkhovna Rada approved amendments to the constitution that reinforce Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO. Ukraine has also been granted NATO partner status with enhanced capabilities.
