The NATO Secretary General considers a possible military conflict over Ukraine

NATO is preparing for Russia's aggression against Ukraine in the event of a failure in security talks between Moscow and the Alliance. This was stated by the Secretary General of the Pact Jens Stoltenberg on Friday at a press conference after a video conference of NATO foreign ministers. At the same time, he noted that Ukraine is "not a member of NATO" and therefore the "principle of collective protection" of the Alliance does not apply to it, reports TACC.

"We are ready for open and honest negotiations with Russia, but we must also be ready for the failure of diplomacy," Stoltenberg said. It (Russia - TASS) will have to pay a high price, economic, political and financial sanctions. "We also support Ukraine by strengthening its military capabilities, thus complicating Russia's decision to use force against that country," Stoltenberg said.

He noted that NATO considers a new military conflict in Europe possible because of Ukraine, which is why it considers it important to have a dialogue with Russia. "The accumulation of forces from Russia does not stop, it continues. This sends us a signal of the real risk of armed conflict in Europe. "Dialogue with Russia is therefore important," he said.

In this regard, NATO welcomes the decision to hold a NATO-Russia Council (NRC) meeting on 12 January. "The conduct of the SNA is a positive signal. We will listen to Russia's concerns. We are ready to discuss various topics, including arms control, both nuclear and conventional, military transparency," he said, stressing that "obligations must be reciprocal. "
