The United States has sent two groups of aircraft carriers to the South China Sea, led by aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and landing helicopter carrier Essex, to take part in the exercises, according to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post.
According to the publication, both groups entered the South China Sea on Tuesday. The Carl Vinson aircraft carrier was escorted by a missile cruiser and five Arly Burke-class destroyers. The Essex was escorted by the Portland amphibious transport ship and the Pearl Harbor landing craft. The US command has not revealed its plans, but the two groups are expected to join forces in a joint exercise.
At the end of last month, the Chinese Navy conducted maneuvers involving the aircraft carrier Shandon in the same area. The ship conducted exercises in the South China Sea, then returned to its home port of Sanya in Hainan Province.
