Pope Francis regrets that pets "sometimes take the place of children"

Pope Francis emphasized the dignity of parents and adoptive parents at a general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday, lamenting that pets "sometimes take the place of children," AFP reported.

"We are witnessing a form of selfishness today. We see that some do not want to have children. Sometimes they have, but they have dogs and cats that take the place of children. It may make you laugh, but it is a reality, "the pope said at the first weekly general audience this year.

According to the pontiff, "this is tantamount to denying paternity and motherhood and belittling us by taking away our humanity." In this way, "civilization is aging because we are losing the wealth of fatherhood and motherhood, and it is the homeland that is suffering," added Pope Francis, addressing the assembled worshipers.

The pope also called on couples who cannot have children to "consider adoption".

"Having a child is always a risk, but there is a greater risk of not having one, of denying parental status," the pope said, urging believers not to be afraid.
