Protesters revolted and police began using measures to disperse them.
The President of Kazakhstan Kasam-Jomart Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government. Until a new cabinet is formed, Deputy Prime Minister Alihan Smailov will serve as the country's prime minister. A state of emergency has been declared in Almaty and Mangistau region until 19 January. It was later imposed in the capital, Nursultan.
Hundreds of protesters have been detained and police action against violators continues. Numerous injured law enforcement officers were also reported.
