The situation in Almaty - protesters stormed the local government building


 

 Protesters in Almaty stormed the city administration building, TACC reports, citing the news portal zakon.kz.

According to the spread information, the gathered were armed with armor, sticks and shields.

Eyewitnesses confirmed to TASS that the protesters tried to storm the building of the city administration of Almaty.

"Sounds of shock grenades are heard from the side of the square, very loud and frequent. It is said that there are many people who came to storm the administrative building. They are invading ... Young people armed with batons and reinforcing bars are appearing from different streets, security forces are everywhere, there are clashes, pogroms. The shops are closed today, "the agency's interlocutors said.

Kazakh President Kasam-Jomart Tokayev has accepted the resignation of the government, whose policy has sparked mass protests in the country, France 24 reports.

The riots in the Almaty region were caused by rising gas prices. Media reported at least 5,000 protesters took part in the protest. They were scattered with shock grenades and tear gas.

Police detained more than 200 people and injured several dozen police officers. Protesters blocked roads and disturbed public order.

 Hours before the government's resignation, President Tokayev declared a state of emergency in Almaty and the Mangistau region until January 19th. At the same time, curfew is introduced from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am. The head of state also called for an end to demonstrations, no provocations outside and inside the country, and no storming of official buildings.
