The delta-omicron hybrid was most likely created by laboratory error

World Health Organization (WHO) expert Maria van Kerhove has suggested that the alleged hybrid of the coronavirus variants "delta" and "omicron" may be the result of a laboratory error, reports TASS.

"The deltacron strain is very likely to have formed from contamination during sequencing," Kerkhove wrote on his Twitter account. Earlier, she said that as "more and more people come into contact with each other without using social and health [restrictive] measures, as well as against the background of the spread of influenza and coronavirus, there will be co-infections."

The expert asked not to use terms such as "deltacron", "fluron" or "fluron" to denote the simultaneous circulation of different viruses, as in her words they mean "a combination of viruses or strains, and this does not happen". Kerhove recommended vaccinating against coronavirus and influenza, keeping a distance, wearing masks, avoiding crowds and regularly ventilating the premises.

On Saturday, Leontios Kostrikis, head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology at the University of Cyprus, said his research team had discovered a new variant of the island's coronavirus, a hybrid of delta and omicron strains. Researchers called the new version "deltacron".
