Work on the Istanbul Channel will be accelerated in 2022

Work on the Istanbul Canal project will be accelerated in 2022, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoglu was quoted as saying by Hurriyet Daily News.

"We started the project in 2021 and one of the main items on our agenda next year will be to speed up work on the Istanbul Canal," Karaismailoglu said on December 30th during a visit to the northwestern province of Bolu.

"The project will increase Turkey's role in global logistics and give a new impetus to the global shipping industry," the minister added.

Turkish authorities have long argued that the construction of the Istanbul Canal is "mandatory" as an alternative sea route, as the capacity of the Bosphorus will not be able to cope with the growing ship traffic in the coming years.

According to the project, the Istanbul Canal will be an artificial sea route between the Black and Marmara Seas. The 45-kilometer canal, which will be developed in the western European part of the city, is expected to have a capacity of 160 ships per day.
